The Cowboys From Sweden - Live all vinyl DJ set from Beech Street Parlor (2013)

 

Flashback to 2013 (or possibly before)...  In the darkened corner of a dimly lit bar, behind a pair of turntables and a mixer surrounded by crates of vinyl sit myself and my buddy Robbie.  All evening we share drinks, funny conversations and musical trivia as we proceed to select and play songs into the wee hours of the night. Each of us assigned to one turntable, taking turns trying to compliment each other's selections, or one up each other (depending on how late it was getting and how many drinks we had) in a duel that lasts for hours.  Many live sets were performed at Beech Street Parlor together over the years.  Sadly the bar is now closed down.  Thankfully some of our live sets were broadcasted on the radio and some were recorded and archived.  Here is a good three hours of one of the many live sets we performed there.  I hope you enjoy it and let the music take you back to simpler times.

Welcome to Volume 2 of the Evens and Odds series. A series where I create mix tapes with special guests (musicians, firends, DJs etc). For volume two I am joined by special guest, my friend, musician and all around good guy Timothy Fife (with solo releases on Death Waltz, Spun Out of Control, Burning Witches Records, Library of the Occult, etc..).  Volume 2 is a deep dive into the world of rare beats, soundtracks and library music. Ozarks - Seven Blood-Stained Orchids flexi-disc/music video (2019)

Late last year my buddy Robbie and myself recorded a cover of Riz Ortolani's main theme from the 1972 Umberto Lenzi giallo thriller "Sette Orchidee Macchiate Di Rosso" (The Seven Blood-Stained Orchids).  We decided to do this for two reasons.  One, Robbie had recently purchased a vintage harpsichord and got it in full working condition.  And two, this rare soundtrack still remains lost and may never be released in any format other than the mono transfer you hear in the film itself.  This theme has been a long time favorite of mine since before 2009 when I finally put it on my "In a Cowboy's Mind" mix tape by The Cowboys from Sweden, and that version I ripped from the movie and cleaned up myself.  It wasn't the greatest sound quality, but at least it got out there!

After the recording was finished, the good folks at Lunaris Records put it out as a limited Flexi-disc with full artwork designed by yours truly.  It comes in a full color fold-over sleeve and the flexi-discs themselves are available in two color variants (Red and White) with silver foil stamping in the center.  If you are a fan of rare italian film music, this is for you!

Also Robbie directed the stylish music video for the song (above), modelled after the opening credits of the film in which the original theme plays.

NEW LINK (2025) - Jane Birkin - Black... White (1980)

Here's a strange promotional pop single that was put out in 1980 by Desk & Feild.  Obviously it's a Jane Birkin single and a very funky one at that.  This single features two versions of a song called "Black... White..." (English and French vocal versions) which was written by Pierre Bachelet and Herve Roy (Emmanuelle OST).  It's a fast paced song with a driving staccato clavichord melody, bass and electric guitars.  Music for ski resorts, should go nicely with a glass of Génépi.  Compliments of BLACK & WHITE Scotch Whiskey.

NEW LINK (2025) - Guy Bonnet - Wladimir Le Musicien (1974)

Guy Bonnet's Wladimir Le Musicien LP is one of the rare holy grails of dignified pop!  Extremely lush arrangements throughout, this album delivers top notch pop/chanson tunes one after the other.  The album also features the notorious Mr. Nabukov track which features heavy breakbeats over dark string arrangements accompanied by a male and female vocal duet.  The album was orchestrated by Karl Heinz Schäfer (Les Gants Blancs Du Diable), so there are plenty of nice Jean-Claude Vannier-esque moments to be found here.  The opening track (which happens to be the title track) Wladimir Le Musicien is one of my favorites.  An extremely ambitious pop tune with extremely groovy verses and an over the top classical piano breakdown at the bridge.  So many great moments on this record, it's hard to mention them all.  Many of the other tracks throughout the album have a nice light baroque-pop feel.  Very catchy, masterfully executed pop with top notch production and musicianship.  Listen for yourselves!  Ripped from the original LP at 320 kbps.  Includes front and back cover scans.  Enjoy.

NEW LINK (2025) - Light Reflections - Tell Me Once Again 7" (1973)

Here's another somewhat obscure single from the early 70s by a Brazilian based group called Light Reflections.  Tell Me Once Again (Side A) is a sweet and smooth love ballad.  Nice mellow jazzy electric guitar tones, sentimental string arrangements, organs, bass, drums...  Both of these tracks are sung in English (with a good thick accent!).  Once again, I was after the B-Side when I tracked this one down.  Eyes Blue Eyes is a dark and trippy downtempo pop tune with a strong liturgical organ intro leading into some slow rimshot breaks driven by a descending pick-bass line.  Vocals are very laid back and nice on this one (melancholy and dreamy).  A smoky atmospheric pop tune not to be missed!  Ripped from vinyl at 320 kbps, includes cover scans!

NEW LINK (2025) - Zeugma - Témoignage/Le Magicien 7" (1978)

Here's a nice rare French rock single by a pretty obscure group called Zeugma.  Honestly I really don't know anything about them really outside of this single (it's their only entry on Discogs), but the tracks here are solid!  The A side is a bit of a proggy rocker that gets into some really bizarro territory with the weirdo fuzz guitar riffs.  A heavy slab of psych for the ones who are into that sort of thing!  The real gold (for me) is the B side on this one with their track Le Magicien.  A beautiful slow burner of a ballad.  Lazy phased guitars driving a great vocal melody over some nice laid back drum breaks.  A real feel-good track.  Ripped from the collection of the Cowboys from Sweden.  I originally intended to include this on the last mix tape "Autumn Moon", but decided I wanted to keep everything in English for that one.  So, here it is for your listening pleasure...  320 rip with cover scans included!  Enjoy.

NEW LINK (2025) - Slogan 69

As promised, here is the first 7" to kick off a small series of seven inch rips by the Cowboys from Sweden.  This one needs no real introduction, everyone should already know how amazing this little record is!  Slogan is probably one of my favorite tracks by anyone ever with it's dark and sexy groove layered with orchestral stabs, groovy bass lines and harpsichord melodies so good that they are maddening!  Talk about a duet, this one is unmatched!  Beautiful, breathy, highly melodic and almost aggressive with passion.  More please.  Anyhow, I'm sure you all know it.  So the real gem here is the B-Side.  A little instrumental track called "Evelyn" which I believe was Jane Birkin's character's name in the film this was made for (the 1969 french art film Slogan).  Great film as well, I highly recommend it!  Anyway, Evelyn is a breathtaking piano driven number with a hypnotic groove and breezy instrumentation.  Over all, it has a bit of a melancholy vibe to the melody, which is probably the reason I am such a sucker for it!  This record is pretty hard to find and it occasionally fetches astronomical prices online.  As far as I know, this 7" is the only official release of Evelyn (aside from the Serge Gainsbourg CD box set of film music put out some years ago).  A true rarity, hope you enjoy it as much as I, and please spread it around...
