"X" - Compiled & Mixed By The Cowboys From Sweden (2011)

Almost an entire year has passed since my last Cowboys From Sweden mix tape was posted! That said, sorry for the wait! Anyway, here it is, the 10th mix by The Cowboys From Sweden (thus the title "X", the Roman Numeral "10"). This one is easily the most dynamic mix of the series so far. Starting off in a dark hallucinogenic daydream, exploring the bliss and loneliness of solitude. Soft dream-like soundscapes melt into dark classical psychedelia. Moody late 60's folk, sentimental piano music, some opium den music... The mood shifts and develops, like a journey for your mind! After a few choice break beat heavy vocal tracks, the mix escalates into a hazy cloud of early 70's prog-rock laced with swirling fuzz guitars, pipe organs, synthesizers and BEATS! Let's not forget about the key ingredient in every Cowboys mix: Groovy bass lines! Plenty of those to be found here as well. Oddly enough, this mix turned up a lot of tracks with upright bass lines as too. All of these ingredients combined build up to the climax of Serge Gainsbourg's "Cargo Culte" from the holiest grail of all pop records, his 1971 masterpiece "Histoire De Melody Nelson" (an LP included in every single Cowboy's DJ set since the beginning of time). Yes, I'm sure you all know it already, but I wanted to showcase it as the premier track since our 10th mix is kind of a special occasion for us, and that album has so much to do with our sound (Well, the sounds we like!). A toast to Serge and Mr. Jean-Claude Vannier! To settle things down after all the commotion, there is a little wink at the camera at the end of the mix with a quiet night time nocturne by Poyuschie Gitary... I hope that you all enjoy it, it's been fun making these mixes and I thank you all for your gracious feedback! It makes it all the more fun to know that people are listening and enjoying these rare tracks with us! Longtime friends Eric Adrian Lee and Brian Grainger finally unite on Backwater Fumes, a 7" split EP on marbled vinyl. Brian's side starts the affair with Mudd's Boots, a track that sounds as if ZZ Top were recorded on a wax cylinder, performing in a country line dancing club out in the swamp, and just as the band picks up the groove, zombies burst onto the dancefloor spewing swamp muck everywhere, only to be dowsed in bourbon and set on fire. After the panic dies down, Eric puts on his Biathalon disguise and cleverly sneaks onstage to flip the record over. Like aural heroin, the sounds of Moss seep out of the speakers and liquefy the minds of the line dancers. Subtle detuning and modulation vibrates through the walls and somehow, everything feels lighter for a moment. Satisfied, Brian bursts through the club's backdoor and meets Eric in mid-air with a Milli Vanilli style high five. At this precise moment, the PA system explodes but a fuzzed out signal incessantly pushes itself through the smoke and wires. Gigantic bass kicks storm the building as a cloaked figure can be barely made out through the haze...this must be Night Sequels, appearing unexpectedly with his blistering remix of Mudd's Boots. Scrambling, Brian and Eric frantically search for the breaker box, otherwise, if Night Sequels is not stopped, the world could be destroyed. Hell, so could the entire universe. At the last possible second, the boys cut power, dispelling Night Sequels back to his evil realm for another millenia, and Brian quickly restarts a charred black laptop to deliver the last burnt jam of the night: a dense, woodsy Coppice Halifax remix of Moss. Midranges smooth over the din and reverb smears reality left and right until we're left with one blurry camera lens. What just happened?

Alright, this is another one of those dream singles that no one can afford. I've managed to track down the two separate tracks from various sources and a nice record scan from some rad person on Flikr (I'm sure you know who you are!) and Frankenstein it all together for your listening pleasure. These are two super funky, noisy French psych-pop insturmentals from 1968, one of which you may recognize from the now infamous "Monsieur Sexe" mix by the one and only Mr. Flash (who seems to be quite the heavyweight crate-digger himself). Anyway, I don't feel much explaining is necessary with this one, just grab it, I'm sure you will love these rare grooves! Thanks to the original rippers whoever you are.

Hey Everyone, sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've been super busy with running a new record label called wil-ru records. We've been putting out tons of stuff this year, so It's been taking up a lot of my time. But I thought I should share, since I love all the stuff we've been doing, I figure you might too. So far we've been focusing on limited edition cassettes and a few vinyl releases here and there. For those of you who remember my Panda Beach post a while back, well, now you can support her and purchase her album on a cool limited edition Cassette! I just put together a Soundcloud page recently, so people can listen to a little bit of music from our whole catalog. We've been putting out a wide variety of music, folk, rock, indie and a whole lot of electronica ranging from dub techno to ambient soundscapes. Here's a little preview of the latest tape we just put out by Stian Gjevik (AKA EOD) under his new moniker CN. It's kind of a retro cosmic electro concept album called "The Expedition Beyond". CN - Adrift by Wil-Ru Records

Nilsson - Per Chi/Leggenda 7" (1972)

A few weeks back my friend Robbie (an infinite source of rare vinyl I can't afford!) found this rare Nilsson single on Italian Ebay. Side A contains an Italian language version of his smash hit "Without You". At the end of the song, he does switch back to English on the last chorus. A powerful song, now available in Italian. But the real winner here is side B, from what I can tell is an old Italian folk song called "Leggenda", which lyrically has something to do with trying to catch a butterfly (and I believe killing it in the process). The moral of the story is that we cannot catch our dreams. Anyway, the song is really catchy and kind of dark aside from the really uplifting bouncy baroque chorus. A rare gem in the vast catalogue of a musical genius! Give it a try. Ripped from vinyl, at 320 Kbps with cover scan included. I would have included the back too, but it was the same as the front...

A rare single from Michèle Mercier...

This is an extremely rare 7" single by actress Michèle Mercier. I've only seen one physical copy online before, so I actually had to Frankenstein this one together from 3 different sources over time. Two really cool tracks on this, it's a shame someone doesn't reissue it. Side A offers "La Fille Qui Fait Tchic Ti Tchic", a really catchy dark pop tune written by Serge Gainsbourg with some obvious help from Jean-Claude Vannier (heavy minor key orchestral stabs, shredding harpsichord). The song is about a girl who wears a metal dress that goes "Tchic Ti Tchic" when she dances (I think, I don't actually speak French). Side B is a flirtatious bouncy pop tune called "Six-Huit" written by Guy Skornik. Slightly less dark than the A side and a bit more up-tempo and funky (while still managing to pull off some top notch orchestration). Although I didn't actually create the original rips and scans here (thank you to whoever originally did!), these two tracks that are pretty hard to track down, so I'd definitely recommend grabbing it while you can...

A Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin single from '69....

A few weeks ago I was browsing my friend Robbie's (the other Cowboy From Sweden) 7" collection and came across this one. I'm sure you all already know it, but I got excited about it and wanted to rip it since it was an original. Keep in mind, it is an original from 1969, so the sound is a bit dirty, but perhaps not as dirty as the music (ha ha)... Anyway, I am huge fan of both of these tracks, Jane B being one of my all time favorites. Both tracks were originally featured on the "Jane Birkin Serge Gainsbourg" LP that was released in 1969 by Fontana. This album is probably the holy grail of sleazy pop chanson, filled with innuendo and blatant sexually charged tracks (69 Erotic Year, Les Sucettes). I think probably enough has been said about "Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus" already, so I don't really want to throw in my two cents, but I will say that it is a masterpiece of liturgical erotica (if that genre exists). I will say a little about "Jane B" however. The melody of the song is based on Frédéric Chopin's Prelude No. 4 in E Minor (one of the "five easy pieces" featured in the 1970 Jack Nicholson film). The other thing about the song that blows my mind is the lyrics which happen to be very cryptic and strangely conceptual for such a pretty tune. The lyrics read as a police report of a missing girl (probably murdered).

Christophe - Aline/Je Ne T'aime Plus 7" (1965)

A few months back I found this rare Christophe Single in an "as is" dollar bin at record store. Turned out to be two really solid french pop tracks, so I thought I should share... Side A titled "Aline" is a lighter number, I assume they are both love songs although I do not speak French. Anyway, Aline is a breezy tune backed with a spector-esque wall of sound: rumbling bass, chink guitars, harpsichord, choir, strings.. The works... On the B side, we have "Je Ne T'aime Plus", which features the same production techniques as Aline but the tune is a bit darker, deeper, more serious with a slight western tint to the melody. Both tracks here are top notch Chanson and would seem at home on Françoise Hardy's debut album "The -Yeh-Yeh- Girl From Paris" from the same year. In fact "Je Ne T'aime Plus" is quite similar to miss Hardy's hit "Le Temps De L'Amour" which is one of my favorites. Give it a listen, the record is well loved, but still sounds decent considering it's age. 320 Rip from vinyl, with scans.

The Gunter Kallmann Choir/Gals & Pals - Daydream/Blue On Blue 7" (2007)

Here's a weird one. A double feature of two obscure Euro-pop groups playing covers. The first one is "Daydream" by The Gunter Kallmann Choir. Sampled by many Trip-Hop artists, it seems like the whole genre was modeled after this single track. Dark orchestral swells, a sparse break beat and a descending bass line, with the "Choir" singing above it all, the song has a "spy" vibe to say the least. Cool song! Although many people credit The Gunter Kallmann Choir as authoring this tune, it was in fact written by a Belgian group called Wallace Collection in 1969. Gals & Pals is a bit more obscure. From what little info I could find about them online, I figured out that they are from Sweden, but that's about it. They perform a dark murky version of "Blue On Blue" (another Trip-Hoppy song!) by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This split was put out in 2007 by some label called Dynamite Soul, but I question their original sources, since side A fades in on the beginning, and Side B cuts off just before the song comes to a complete stop. Weird... Anyway, here it is.

Sven Libaek & His Orchestra - Misty Canyon/Soul Thing 7" (1970)

Here is one of my all time favorite library grooves by the one and only Norwegian film & Television composer, Sven Libaek! Misty Canyon, what a cool track! Deep, moody, groovy, jazzy, dark & spacey... Perfect! You rarely find a track where the bass line & drum beat groove together as naturally as this (plus, what a cool vibraphone solo right?). This track definitely gets dropped every time I spin records. On the other side we've got "Soul Thing". Same overall sound as side one, but this ones a bit more up-tempo with a lighter mood to it. Both tracks originally appeared on Sven Libaek's 1970 Library record "My Thing", which always reminds me sonically of Lee Hazlewood's epic "Cowboy in Sweden" album from the same year, oddly enough. This single was put out by Votary Records from Australia a few months ago. Supposedly they are also working on reissuing the entire album eventually, but even this single kept being pushed back for what seemed like forever, so we'll see when it shows up. You can find this record at www.dustygroove.com, but supplies are limited, so hurry up. After hearing these tracks, can you believe that Sven composed music for Hanna-Barbera cartoons too? Enjoy...

Sean Bonniwell//The Music Machine - Point of no Return/King Mixer 7" (1966)

I did a little bit of vinyl ripping today, so I thought I should share some of it. First up is a 7" that Sundazed put out a few years back of two unreleased Sean Bonniwell tracks. Well, technically the sleeve reads Sean Bonniwell//The Music Machine, so maybe there was some confusion about if the tracks were solo work or B sides from The Music Machine. I'm not sure. Anyway, they are both pretty interesting artifacts of forgotten American psychedelic garage rock. The A side "Point of no Return" is pretty far out psych trip, featuring a lot of abrupt blasts of fuzz guitar, organ, feedback and of course Sean's deep dramatic vocal delivery. The riffs in this one have almost a medieval feel to them, not so different from Strawberry Alarm Clocks "Incense and Peppermints". Side B "King Mixer" is a little poppier, and a little groovier. Pretty catchy actually. Anyway, this guy's got a pretty good finger on psychedelia, so check it out... 320 rips, front and back cover scans included!

Bruno Nicolai - Perche Quelle Strane Gocce Di Sangue Sul Corpo Di Jennifer? (1972)

Attention giallo fans! Here is the soundtrack to the 1972 film "Perche Quelle Strane Gocce Di Sangue Sul Corpo Di Jennifer?" (I love how long giallo titles get!). Alternate English titles include "The Case of the Bloody Iris" and "What Are Those Strange Drops of Blood Doing on Jennifer's Body?". The film was Directed by Giuliano Carnimeo and stars a more often than not turtle-necked George Hilton and the lovely Edwige Fenech. The soundtrack was composed by Bruno Nicolai and features some top shelf arrangements, which raises the question: why is this soundtrack so obscure? I've never seen this full soundtrack online before anywhere. ...This is Bruno at his best! The soundtrack is full of catchy main title themes, light and breezy bossa novas, a couple of darker widescreen grooves and plenty of orchestral suspense and black leather-gloved killer themes. The soundtrack also features one of my personal favorite pieces of music I've ever heard in a giallo film which was also included in the trailer; the beautiful but drum heavy "Jennifer's Recall" which was just used on the "Sound Selections" mix tape by The Cowboys From Sweden. A steady breakbeat paired with a dark and groovy bass line, that sits on top of a sea of minor key string harmonies that flow in and out of each other effortlessly in an almost non rhythmic sort of way. I'm not sure how it came to be, but is is truly a beautiful piece of music. Highly Recommended! 320 Kbps!

"Sound Selections" - Compiled & Mixed By The Cowboys From Sweden (2010)

It's finally here: "Sound Selections" the ninth mix tape by the Cowboys from Sweden. Seems like I have been working on this one for almost a year now. Sound Selections is the first mix in the series to feature exclusively instrumental tracks with a heavy emphasis on the darker and prettier side of vintage European Library and Cinema music. Now if you already follow the genre a bit you should understand that "instrumental" doesn't imply no vocals, but no lyrics rather. The mix is a pretty even 50/50 split of Library tracks and movie themes. The over all sound is largely darker classical influenced melodies, heavy on the bass, heavy on the strings, heavy on the drums... Very introspective and quite serious in mood. Since this mix had a bit more of a specific direction than usual, I allowed myself to include some old favorites that are more diliberate nods to Giallo and Poliziotteschi films. For instance Ennio Morricone's theme to Massimo Dallamano's 1972 film "What have you done to Solange?" and the insanely beautiful "Pursuited/Jennifer's Recall" by Bruno Nicolai from "The Case of the Bloody Iris" and of course the genre defining Cop track "Confessione Di Un Commissario" by Riz Ortolani from the gratuitously titled "Confessione di un commissario di polizia al procuratore della repubblica" starring the always awesome Franco Nero.. To sum it up, be expecting a beautiful ride with a few minor detours into more specifically "Film" music territory. Not sure what else to say, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The mix runs one hour and seventeen minutes and has been remastered for optimal sound quality. 320 Kbps

Here's a rip I did today of Meiko Kaji's classic hit song "Urami Bushi" originally featured (I believe) in her 1973 film "Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion - Grudge Song" (which I have not seen yet, but I'm sure it's very violent based on the other film I've seen in the series "Beast Stable"). Anyway, you probably all know the track since Quentin Tarantino used it in his Kill Bill films. "Urami Bushi" is backed with an equally catchy track titled "Onna No Jumon". I guess this music is in the Enka style, but I'm not too familiar with that phrase. To me it sounds like a mash-up of spaghetti western and yakuza gang music. ....Big guitars, swanky brass, low-key funky basslines, drums, marimbas & percussion, string orchestra.... This record is just about what I would call perfect music. Thanks to my buddy John for lending this single to me to be shared with all! 320 Rip. Enjoy!

Gary Pacific Orchestra - Soft Wind 45 (2009 Reissue)

Here's a quick vinyl rip, but a great one! After using the title track from this 7" on a mix tape a while back ("In A Cowboy's Mind", track 4), I fell in love with the track so deeply that I felt obligated to get my hands on a physical copy. Lucky for me Sonorama put out this nice 45 reissue last year that includes "Soft Wind" and two other killer tracks. First I'll start with Soft Wind... This song is so cool. Starting up with bass and drums, the song gradually locks into a super groovy break that is accompanied by smooth horns and spaced-out guitars. The overall vibe is somewhere between Sven Libaek's early 70's Library work and the precision and sophistication of Serge Gainsbourg's beat driven euro-pop sound (Think "En Melody"). Track 2 "Stop Your Fever" is basically a remake of Soft Wind, but a little more blown out and over the top. Same basic backing track, but this time, let's add heavy bongos, flashy Saxophone's etc... Very reminiscent of Gert Wilden Orchestra or the Vamipres of Dartmore. You get the picture. ...Basically the end credits to a 70's exploitation film. Track 3, the oddly named "E. Colitron Alpha", doesn't waste any time. Following in the footsteps of track 2, this track quickly escalates into a full speed heavy-funk car chase (Not literally, but that's what I'd imagine). Get it here, 320 kbps Rip (Including scans), delivered straight from vinyl to your precious ears.

Herman's Rocket

Here's is a crazy LP that most of you probably already know if you have any interest in Space Disco. But incase you don't already know it, here is a 320 rip of this 1977 space disco classic from Herman's Rocket "Space Woman". Featuring Jean-Pierre Massiera, one of the zaniest producers I've heard so far manning the controls. Deep psychedelic space funk that's heavy on the synthesizers. The title track "Space Woman" has the same melody, bass line and overall groove as the smash hit "Miss Broadway" by Belle Epoque (oddly enough it's from the same year). Recommended for serious disco fans, or anybody who just enjoys music that is really far out there. Oh, I'm not sure why, but they are also known as Venus Gang. ...A band so nice they named it twice I guess? Enjoy!

The Cowboys From Sweden Live DJ-Set at TIGA, December 9th, 2009.

Hey Everyone,
Here's a live DJ set that was recorded back in December of last year, straight from the mixer to the radio. This was a 5 hour set, but only 2 hours of it was broadcasted. So if you are interested, you can hear what a pretty typical night is for us. You'll have to excuse the crudeness of the mix. It's hard to be as precise live as we are on the mix tapes because there are two of us and the occasional person talking to us during the set, so that said, it's no mix tape, but still a lot of great songs here. The mix picks up right at the tail end of our "modern set", then into the older classier stuff. We generally play modern tracks we like for the first hour or so to warm up before we really get into it. Anyway, this is on continuous 2 hour track. Sorry, no divisions or track-listing. Hope you enjoy it regardless. This is an all vinyl mix, we believe that ipods are cheating when it comes to a live set. Thanks for your comments.

Sven Libaek - Inner Space 7" (1973)

Here are two excellent tracks by Mr. Sven Libaek that were originally featured as the underwater soundtrack to Ron & Val Taylor's Inner Space (a thirteen part underwater nature documentary/television series), which apparently was narrated by William Shatner. I haven't seen it (although I would love to) so correct me if this information is wrong... The music is dark, spacey, psychedelic and remains pretty low key and subdued most of the time with the exception of a couple dramatic builds here and there. If any of you listen to the Cowboys from Sweden mixes, you may recognize Dark World from the "Smoke" mix. Danger Reef has a cool shark jazz feel, with ultra atmospheric/psychedelic vibes and wah-wah guitar. Super highly recommended! Also this may still be in print, so please try and purchase it if you come across it. Sometimes www.dustygroove.com has it. 320 kbps includes scan.

Here is a short 4 song 7" EP by Les Paul and Mary Ford. Really tasteful guitar playing by les Paul and nice smokey vocals by Mary Ford. The songs are kind of a jazz/blues/country lounge kind of thing. Nice music. Keep in mind this record is from 1954, and I had to scrub some mold off it to rip it, so the rip is pretty crackly. Just pretend you are in your den, sitting in front of a warm fire place (your freezing apartment) listening to this on your vintage Hi-Fi (your crappy ipod dock). Enjoy this 320 rip!

This is a tape rip of this weird New Age/Self Help instrumental music album that I found in a Thrift Store in Illinois last month. Four untitled songs (that repeat on the other side of the tape) that are "Proven to Boost Vitality". More like "Proven to be AWESOME".... Don't get me wrong, this tape sucks, but is pretty funny. Reminds me of later Tangerine Dream mixed with a generous dash of synth bending Claudio Simonetti riffs (late 70s Goblins). Listen while you are at home, driving or at work. For best results, listen with Dolby turned off.

Panda Beach - Last Days Ashore (2009)

This EP is the first official release by Ebi Nasution also known as Panda Beach. Ebi recorded these songs on a cell phone at her home in Jakarta Indonesia between May and August of this year. Beautiful mellow and atmospheric folk music reminiscent of Sybille Baier, Vashti Bunyan and Kazu Makino (in my opinion). Track one "Boom" was fleshed out by Chariots of Night with mellotron sounds, bells and drum samples making it more of a pop track than the rest of the EP. The other songs were all played by Ebi on Guitar and Piano. Aside from that, there isn't much more I can say about it except that I designed the cover art for her and did sort of a lo-fi mastering on it. My only regret is that it is so short (just over 15 minutes of music). This EP comes highly recommended! ...And of course comments are appreciated!

Here is a fresh vinyl rip of a funky 7" by Jean-Claude Vannier (the man behind the orchestration of Serge Gainsbourg's impeccable masterpiece "Histoire De Melody Nelson"). Featuring four rare, dark, groovy and out of control tracks from the early 70's, all contained on this one 45 single. I believe the cool Gainsbourg-esque "Theme 504" is exclusive to this release, so I hope you all appreciate this rip, since I haven't seen it posted anywhere else yet. This soundtrack album contains the music from four separate soundtracks from the late 60s composed by Serge Gainsbourg and Michel Colombier (although Manon 70 and Anna were composed by Gainsbourg without the help of Michel Colombier). Very rare and wonderful music here. I thought this would be a good one to share since I have not seen it up anywhere online yet. Each score has a pretty different feel. The songs of Manon 70 are very dark and beautiful orchestral works, heavy on organ and piano. Most of you probably have already heard Anna, but there are some rarities there too. Funky over the top jams and intrumentals etc... The rest is a mish-mash of spy film music, orchestral work, psychedelic sitar grooves, breaks and more. This is a great collection of music and a must for Gainsbourg fans. Most of these songs are unavailable on vinyl, making this release the only way to hear much of this music. Armando Trovajoli - L'Arcidiavolo (1966)

Here is a crazy soundtrack I picked up a few weeks ago. This is Armando Tovajoli's score for the 1966 comedy period peice set in renaissance times called "L'Arcidiavolo" or "The Devil In Love". I have not seen the film (I believe it's out of print), but despite the strange/deceptive album cover this is a fantastic LP. To be honest, based on the cover I was expecting renaissance or medieval music. Now, while this music references renaissance melodies, the soundtrack is surprisingly up-tempo and funky. There are Religious overtones to the songs, but in a weird party kind of way. Lot's of break beats, pick-bass, harpsichord, choir, and organ. Arranged by Carlo Pes and performed by I Marc 4 (The band who played about on 99% of Trovajoli's soundtracks), Edda Dell'Orso and I Cantori Moderni Di Alessandroni (Alessandro Alessandroni's modern choir). I took the time to rip both vinyl discs for you, so I think it goes with out saying that this is highly recommended. I haven't seen it posted anywhere else yet, so enjoy and feel free to share it. Ripped at 320 Kbps. Disc one is the soundtrack and disc two is alternate film versions presented in mono.

Kittenz - Live At Apotheke 05/04/06

And last but not least in the Apotheke series is Kittenz. Kittenz are two dudes (Matt and Myron) from Portland. The band was formerly known as Specifics and I believe that they are no longer making music together do to one of them moving away. This show was special to me because I specifically requested them to play that night at my art show opening (Apotheke had regular rotating art shows each month). So since I was feeling nostalgic about the show, I decided to include a photo taken that night in the bar. This will be the last post of these shows. I have a recording of my band Metal playing at Apotheke, but since we use live instruments, the recording has a lot of room noise. So, I'll hold off on that one. I hope you all enjoy these live sets. Arovane - Live At Apotheke 08/19/05

Here is another one of the early shows at Apotheke, this time all the way from Germany. This was Arovane's debut performance in the united states and a strong one at that! Arovane (Uwe Zahn) brought it much harder and faster than we were expecting. Apparently his live sets play out much more like an Autechre record than the usual chilled out Arovane sound. ...But the melodies were still there. Check it out.

Kim Hiorthøy - Live At Apotheke 05/27/05

A few years back my friend Caleb opened a bar in Portland called Apotheke. It was kind of a conceptual project. The bar featured an entirely white interior, designer food and drinks and almost exclusively electronic music. There were Djs and live groups on a pretty regular basis there. My buddy (and band mate) Aaron did sound there a lot, so we plugged in the old minidisc occasionally and captured some great performances straight from the sound board. I wanted to post a few of these live IDM sets here. Sort of a "Live at Apotheke" mini series. I hope you enjoy them. Here is the first performance. For the opening night Caleb flew in Kim Hiorthøy all the way from Norway to perform for us. I was stoked because I was already a huge fan of his (both his music and graphic design work). So here it is, the first installation. Keep in mind that these are direct from the board, so there is none of that pesky crowd noise on these recordings. None of the tracks are titled and most of them are just one continuous track.

Hello Everybody! Today I've got a special treat for you. A while back someone requested that I repost Cowboy in Sweden, but I was waiting for this rip from my buddy. This is a vinyl rip of the original 1970 pressing of the album and my friend and I both agree, it is probably the best sounding rip of the album currently available (next to the original vinyl it's self). A few years back a label called Smells Like Records reissued this album at a very poor quality, and I heard that even Lee (RIP) wasn't too happy with the sound quality. It sounds like they did a vinyl rip and mixed out the crackle by turning down all the high frequencies. That was the way I first heard this album, so to my surprise when we finally tracked down a few original copies from Swedish Ebay, There was so much detail missing on the reissue, it's unreal. So, that said, this is a far superior rip of the album. There is some light crackle, but overall the album sounds much bigger, much fuller, and you can actually hear the instrumentation much clearer than before. I'm very excited about this one cause over the past few years this has become one of my all time favorite albums (right up there with Histoire De Melody Nelson). So, I'm happy to share it with everyone, I hope you can appreciate it as much as I do. I heard rumors of another vinyl reissue coming out soon. So let's hope they do a better job this time. Meanwhile, enjoy! This was ripped at 320 kbps of course, and I've included a folder containing all of the artwork and labels etc. for your enjoyment as well. Happy Listening.

The Vampires of Dartmoore - Dracula's Music Cabinet (1969)

Hello everybody. It's been awhile since I've checked in with my blog. I've noticed a lot of comments about problems with Zshare links. So for those of you who have been requesting updated links or reposts, I'm working on that. Sorry to keep you waiting so long. I know how crappy it is when you search for something forever, and come across it only to find a dead link. So, I've been updating my posts with Mediafire links. I hope that works for you all. All the links that have been updated should read "NEW LINK!" in the title post. So thanks for everyone who's been downloading my mixes etc.. It's always nice to get some feed back.

Anyway, Enough business for now. I realized I haven't posted anything new in a while, so here is a record I hope you will enjoy (and don't already have). I got inspired to post it when I was reposting the Vampires Sound Incorporation record (Amazing!) Here is another Vampire themed German band that oddly came out the same year as the Vampires Sound Incorporation... 69 Erotic Year (sorry, I couldn't resist). I don't know much about them really, but I've read things here and there. Supposedly, they were one of those bands made up of all studio musicians and the album was intended to be a Soundtrack (but it never happened). At least that's what I've heard. Feel free to post some info in the comments if you know anything about it. Anyway, the music is pretty interesting actually. Similar to the Vampyros Lesbos sound, but more of a lo-fi Sven Libaek thing happening. All the tracks are pretty psychedelic with lots of overdubbed sound effects for an over all more dramatic horror/halloween type of vibe. I still think it sort of belongs in the realm of the mondo cocktail cinema grooves type of stuff though (rather than spooky holiday records). Check it out, it's pretty entertaining and has an unusual sound quality. 192 Kbps. Just over a half hour...

Pretty self explanatory... An new compilation put together by the Cowboys from Sweden. This one emphasizes mostly on break beats, psychedelic atmospheres and dramatic themes from films and library records (mostly Italian with the exception of a few tracks). I guess this one was sort of inspired by our recent record spinning sets at local Portland bars, at least it's somewhat reflective of our (Robbie and myself) live sets... Not much more I can say about it. It's all pretty up-beat and funky and would make a great party soundtrack. I actually went through the trouble to make a front and back cover for those of you who are into this kind of stuff... Dig in!

Alessandro Alessandroni & Nora Orlandi - Music For Strange Situations (2003)

Here is some crazy stuff by soundtrack gurus Alessandro Alessandroni & Nora Orlandi. The title of this comp definitely fits the sound. Alessandroni is best know for his whistling work with Ennio Morricone, but apparently he has made around 50 soundtracks and other albums himself. Alessandroni is a fuzztone guitar virtuoso, and many of his psychedelic moods can be found here on this album. The tracks alter between the two Italian composers throughout the mix and take us deep into strange moods, psychedelic atmospheres, cocktail party jams and eerie choir arrangements. There isn't really any filler on this disc if you ask me, both of these composers are very edgy and keep things fresh and spooky. Happy listening!!

Vincent Gallo - Live At Royal Festival Hall, April 5th, 2004

This is probably the best sounding live recording I have heard of a Vincent Gallo Show. The recording has a nice mellow vibe throughout the duration of the 12 songs. Pretty low key and jazzy most of the time except for tracks three and ten where the band jams for a while (which is cool to hear). To my knowledge, track 11 entitled "You Sure Are" is exclusive to this recording. I haven't heard any other versions of it out there yet. There are also two covers on this one; "Moonchild" by King Crimson and Henry Mancini's "Moonriver" from Breakfast at Tiffany's which features PJ Harvey on Vocals and John Frusciante on Guitar for the final song of the show.

Now here is a strange record put out on the Mercury Label in 1969 by two German Composers, Manfred Hübler and Siegfried Schwab. Although this album wasn't technically a soundtrack, the music was used in the Jess Franco film "Vampyros Lesbos" (which I understand was quite terrible). The music is pretty over the top psychedelic cocktail jazz/funk with a vampiric theme, kind of hokey, but none the less fun to listen to... Track three seems to be a spoof on the Rolling Stones song "Satisfaction". This would make a great soundtrack for a cocktail party, and a good edition to your eurotrash library...

Incase you were wondering who are The Cowboys From Sweden? Well, I believe that we are the only Lee Hazlewood cover band in the world (to my knowledge). ...And if you aren't already familiar with Lee Hazlewood, Well, I would recommend his 1970 album "Cowboy in Sweden" (from where we got our name) to start with. The Cowboys From Sweden are Robbie Augspurger and Eric Lee along with some occasional help from Eric Dexter and Ellen Werner. Serge Gainsbourg - Cannabis (1969)

This is the score to Pierre Koralnik's 1969 film Cannabis. The film was titled "French Intrigue" (also "The Mafia Wants Your Blood") for the US release. Not only did Serge Gainsbourg compose the soundtrack (in collaboration with Jean-Claude Vannier), he also starred in the film with his wife Jane Birkin. This is one of my favorite of Gainsbourg's soundtracks, full of amazing grooves, break-beat drums, harpsichord, huge guitar riffs and funky bass lines. The film it's self was pretty slow and kind of corny actually, but worth it to see Serge shooting up gangsters with a tommy gun in an enormous chicken coop. The music is much better than the film. It's definitely worth the download....

Also, this 2003 reissue includes the soundtrack to the 1967 film "Ce Sacre Grand-Pere" or "The marriage came tumbling down" which Gainsbourg co-wrote with Michel Colombier. I haven't seen this film, so I won't try and fake my way through a review. Musically however, the soundtrack is not as funky as Cannabis, but has some very nice moments and some dark and pretty instrumentals. A bit more orchestral, but still has the Gainsbourg touch. Beautiful.

Don George - Mr. Romance (2004)

Awesome... This is singer/actor Don George's album "Mr. Romance". Don George happens to be my band mate Robbie Augspurger's grandfather and all around good guy. This is a karaoke album Mr. George cut back in 2004 at a professional recording studio. The songs are mostly covers of Sinatra, Ray Charles, stuff like that. Stuff he likes to sing. Don had a cold when he recorded this, so he claims that it's not his best work, but it sure has a lot of character... He also claims that he is a 9000 year old dracula. Just kidding, that's not true, I made that part up. The music is Don's voice backed by expensive midis. Not sure there is anything else I can say about it. Cool, I'm glad I posted this.

Metal - The Silent World (2007)

"The Silent World" was recorded at the Artistery in Portland, Oregon between 2006 and 2007. The title is a reference to Jacques Cousteau's 1956 award winning nature documentary film "Le Monde Du Silence" (The Silent World). This album also features audio samples of dialog from the film. This is a limited edition CDR release. I believe there were less than copies 100 made. Melodic ambient drones, lonesome guitars, oceanside field recordings and deep textures to get lost in. Not to mention a story on the title track. Enjoy.

Here are a couple covers of albums that I have recently been given or found at thrift stores. My favorite is Live a Happy "LIFE" by the Baxter family. I can't believe that one slipped past the editor. Then there is Gerald Barkey, The Singing Policeman (You got to love floating head covers), Wizard at the console, the Bionic Woman tearing a car door from it's hinges and a photo of Benji looking tropical from the back of a Benji story album. Somebody get that dog some sunglasses....

Friday Session was made by Aaron Shepherd in 2005 at the old Artistery house in Portland Oregon. This record is sort of an alternate take on the first Metal record "The Sounds of our Seas". It features some of the same tracks, but has a lot of diffent material as well. Ambient piano, keyboard and guitar drones backed by field recordings of the sky. What more can I say? One track running about 70 minutes. Sentimental melodic atmosphere....

Vincent Gallo Live At Club Quattro

Here is another Vincent Gallo Performance for those who enjoyed the last post. This one is from the "When" tour back in 2001. The show was recorded at Club Quattro in Hiroshima Japan. The majority of the songs are from the When album, but there are some rarities here as well. A cover of "a taste of honey" and King Crimson's "cadence & cascade". Another cool song to look out for is "Teresa" which I think is an original, but I'm not sure. This is a cool show, there is some serious jamming here. The band even turns "Yes, I'm lonely" into a 10 minute jam session. Backing Gallo are Josh Klinghoffer on Guitars and Keys (who played frequently with Red Hot Chili Peppers and John Frusciante) and Carla Azar (of Autolux) on drums. Sound quality is pretty good if you can get past the Japanese girls giggling and screaming between all of the songs. I liked it a lot.

This is Vincent Gallo's live set from his 2005 performance at the All Tomorrow's Parties (which he curated that year). Performing with him was Sean Lennon on guitars and keyboards and Yuka Honda on drums and bass. Of the 11 songs the band performed, 3 of them were instrumentals written just for the show, also Sean performs two of his own songs. The sound quality is pretty good considering it probably being a mic in the crowd. Nice mellow lounge set. It's interesting to hear Gallo's improvisations of his studio songs. Most of the songs performed are from Vincent Gallo's album "When". Enjoy...

Nancy & Lee Again (1972)

Hello everybody, hope all is well. Today I have something special for everybody. A very obscure album (I had a very hard time finding this one) by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood (one of my idols). Don't know much about it besides that it is the second the pair did together under that name and it was recorded in 1972, a fine year for sunny studio pop albums. Oh, also I believe Lee had to return from Sweden to make this one. So if you're into 70's country with lots of charm, you'll probably like this.

Brian Grainger & Friends - The Bland Stand Collective Volumes 1&2 (1998-2005)

To start off October, I have something very special for you all. Brian Grainger of Milieu has gathered this compilation of unreleased tunes (from various bands he had formed) recorded between 1998 and 2004 exclusively for this blog (at least at the moment). This is the first place for this stuff to surface and I am very honored that he is allowing me to post it. So thanks Brian. Brian was kind enough to include a brief statement regarding the recorded material, so here it is, I won't continue rambling.

A note about these compilations:
"These are completely unreleased recordings, made either by myself or with various other contributors, some of them as old as highschool. Please be forgiving with the audio quality on some of this material, as "professional" and "produced" weren't really terms I used back in the day. Alot of this was never meant to be released to the public, but thanks to some (light) prodding by some (well meaning) friends and "fans", it's here. Enjoy it, if you can, and have fun looking back on what was floating around in my creative head well before Milieu was ever an idea!"

Robbie Augspurger - The Buffalo Album (1997)

Here it is, the self proclaimed "worst album ever made" by Robert Martin Augspurger (aka Robbie). I'm not sure what I can say about this to hype it up anymore. 19 tracks of lo fi rock songs recorded on a karaoke machine back in 1995 (to 1997). Something for everybody here. Song genres range from medieval voyager themes, to mafia surf songs. A true barbecue for the ears. A 90's lo fi audio extravaganza . This is the first chapter in Robbie's prolific musical journey. WINO (2006)

We only made one song under this name. Wino was myself and Eric Dexter. This is a weird drone made up of guitars and keyboards sounds through loop station pedals. That's about it really. We were too lazy to give the drone a name, just the band. We recorded it on May 25th at the old Hanger 18 on Ainsworth Street in Portland Oregon. Seven and a half minutes of sound. We did it.

METAL - The Sounds Of Our Seas (2005)

The Sounds Of Our Seas is the first official album by Metal, although Aaron Shepherd had been making music under that name for quite some time before I entered the scene. We recorded this album at the Artistery studio over a period of several months back in 2005. The album also features Eric Dexter on keyboard and possibly a few others. The songs are long drawn-out drones, loops and improvisations backed by field recordings of the porch, the beach and other locations in Oregon. The music mostly consits of guitars, pianos and Keyboards, but there are some other things happening in there too. Pretty chill listening with the exception of track one that has some pretty noisy guitar feedback on it. 10 tracks total (spanning one hour), not all of them managed to get titled either, but most of them are. Packaged in nice folded cardboard CD packs with a photo xerox glued to the front of the sleeve. Each disc was hand written in gold pen and featured a track listing insert and an origami crane by Eric Dexter. A true DIY album! This album is now out of print. I think there were less than 100 made. So now you can get it here... Spacey!

OREGONE (2006)

OREGONE is a community of experimental musicians from the Portland area. Founded by Cup Na Cup (Audiocrip) and Every Drum a Star in 2005. This is the first compilation that was released in 2006. There has not yet been a second comp, but there are still plans for the second one this year (hopefully) according to the website. This disc features 12 groups that are considered to be experimental from around these parts. The disc runs 78:27 minutes over 13 Tracks. You can get more info at the Oregone website: www.oregone.org. Packaged in a handsome slim DVD case with a full color outer sleeve and pressed on jet black compact discs. This is out of print, but I believe there may still be a few copys hanging around somewhere. Nice sounds and Wierd sounds too. Give it a chance if you fancy your self an experimental listener...

Nature Film Idm Mix

Hello everybody, hope all is going well for you. Today I am feeling a little under the weather, so I decided to post this chillout Idm mix I made a couple years back. I hope you all enjoy it. It is a compilation of many of my favorite groups from the electronic genre (perhaps it isn't all idm?). So to beak it down, this is about 75 minutes of gapless ambient/electronic music mixed by yours truly back in 2005. Since the music all flows together, the "mixes" are sometimes rhythmic, but usually melodic mashes. People who are familiar with these songs may get a kick out of the transitions. Nice relaxing background listening! Check it out.

Metal - Birthday Drones Three (2007)

Here is the latest Birthday Drones record (for my 27th birthday). By now you have probably figured out that I was born in 1980. Once again, all the material was written and recorded by Aaron Shepherd in the past couple months. This is probably my favorite one so far. It starts off with a massive ambient drone that conjures up imagery of mountain tops and deep forests. This movment makes up for about the first 15 minutes or so, then the mood changes slightly when slow guitars enter the scene. Tonally it reminds me of some of Vincent Gallo's early film soundtrack recordings. Very melanchollie, very still. Around the 19 minute mark, a slow pulsing drum breifly enters and leaves quietly. The third movement is an acoustic guitar mantra with a field recording behind it that sort of has a lonesome cowboy vibe. A distant desert song, probably good music for drinking modelo negro in a field with your friends... This record is one untitled track that lasts about 40 minutes. Aaron is the man! Go get it.

Metal - Birthday Drones Two (2006)

Here is the second record of the series, this one for my 26th birthday. A wide spectrum of sounds here, ranging from melodic structural improvisation to free form abstract sound manipulating, but all of it done tastefully and in a highly listenable style! For fans of deep spaced out texture and melodic drone. I recomend it! Two untitled tracks, sixty six minutes in length, enjoy.

Metal - Birthday drones series...

For the past 3 years, my band mate Aaron Shepherd has made a drone record each year just for my birthday, like a musical birthday gift. I guess he knows that I like to make my paintings while listening to ambient music. Anyway, I think these are really good records and I think other people deserve to hear them just as well. So if you are into long instrumental drone albums, you should deffinately check out this series I call "Birthday drones"... So since there are three total (so far), I guess it would make sense to post the first one first. So here it is: Birthday drones one, recorded in august of 2005 at the Artistery in Portland,OR. This is a double disc of ambient drone spanning a total of about 2 hours on only three tracks. Mostly textural guitars and vocal drones, resulting in a nice (major scale) atmosphere on disc one, great for pensive listening. Disc two is similar, but more of a darker vibe on that one (which I personally prefer over disc one). Both are great and deserve to be heard. ...Beautiful, Thanks Aaron, for thinking of me on my birthday! Oh, I almost forgot, since Aaron makes up half of Metal, this series will be tagged as "metal", but I don't play on them (well except on "Birthday Drones 2" I think there is a live track included somewhere in the mix that I'm playing on). Alright, I think I've said enough...

Milieu - Simple Stations Repeat (2005)

With the permission of my friend Brian Grainger, I'm posting one of his records from 2005 "Simple Stations Repeat". The album was recorded in one week for the online music compilation Project 168 and released in mp3 format online. I think this may have been the first record I heard by brian, and since have become a big fan of his. Hazy melodic lo fi electronica with minimal mid-tempo beats, makes for a nice lazy evening listen. This album features on of my favorite Milieu tracks "my shiny sunday", check it out!

TIme for some mix tapes!

Recently a lot of big music artists were releasing these compilations of music that they hand picked. Sort of like a celebrity mix tape or something. Anyway there is a series called "Late Night Tales" of these mixes. Anyway, I love the idea, and I love making mix tapes, so I want in. I've made two volumes of my own "Late Night Tales" mixes. One for older music, and one for newer music. Anyhow, here is the first mix focusing on older music, or older sounding music (that I love). METAL - THE WORLD AT OUR FEET

"THE WORLD AT OUR FEET" is a short nature film that was made by Eric Dexter and Narrated by Aaron Shepherd. This film features music by Metal and a couple tracks by Biathalon (on the film, not on the record). These tracks are a collaboration between Metal and Eric Dexter and were recorded specifically for this film in the fall of 2006. This record features and alternate version of Biathalon's Cloud Formations (performed live) by all of us. Short and Sweet, sunny warm textures, sentimental guitar playing and an overall peaceful atmospheric mood. Sleepy listening. Three tracks, eighteen and a half minutes.

METAL Live on KPSU 2007

This is a radio broadcast of a live metal show from the KPSU studio in downtown Portland. It was recorded from the board in the studio, so there is good sound quality here. This transmission was perfomed on February 3rd, 2007 sometime around noon for the "what's this called" show hosted by "Ricardo Wang". More deep ambience to get lost in... Two tracks, four songs, a total of 55 minutes.

METAL - '04 DRONE SESSION

Metal is a group that I play in with my band mate Aaron Shepherd who runs the Artistery (a venue and artist community here in Portland, OR). I will most likely be posting alot of this stuff, given the nature of our process (we have a lot of unreleased material). Anyway, this will be my first METAL post. This session was recorded live sometime in 2004 at the old Artistery house. It is a free form improvisation of guitars, keyboard, cymbals, photo theremin, various effects and feedback speakers. The result was a very long drawn out melachollie drone with various movements. Cold atmospheric drone all in one 75 minute unedited track. In the begining you can even hear our voices discussing which key to play in!
