Here's a little treat for all of you who collect French rarities! A nice little 7" by Léonie Lousseau featuring two insanely good tracks! "En Alabama" (Written by the one and only Jean-Claude Vannier and Sébastien Poitrenaud) is basically a vocal version of Vannier's library groove "Je M'Appelle Geraldine", a bonus track from his 1972 masterpiece "L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches". On the B side we find a nice tune written by French pop star and soundtracker - Christope called "Wahala Manitou", a bit of a slow burner, but equally as engaging. This single is pretty hard to find in the states, so I hope you enjoy this fresh vinyl rip! 320 kbps naturally with cover scans included.

Finally, a brand new mix by the Cowboys from Sweden! This one I've actually been sitting on for a few years now believe it or not. In a mostly dark catalog, "Melancholy Suite 70" is a lighter pop mix from the Cowboys from Sweden. The emphasis here is primarily light and breezy Baroque Pop music from the late 60s and early 70s. As I said before, I've been wanting to put together this mix for a few years now, but have continued to be distracted by all of the dark holy grails of European soundtracks, library and popular music. So, it's a bit of a relief to take a short break from that sound and do something a little less moody for a change. However, I'm already cooking up my next (even darker) Cowboys mix! Hopefully that won't take as long as this one did. Anyway, here you go, a nice Baroque listen featuring lots of dignified pop obscurities and I'm sure a lot of pop hits as well. Here's anther quick one while I'm at it. This is a four track EP by Claude François called "Monsieur Le Businessman" from 1968. A pretty upbeat little single featuring four over the top (and sometimes slightly zany) French vocal pop tracks. Huge orchestral arrangements, heavy drumming and Mr. François' insane vocal delivery makes for a very entertaining listen. Short and sweet, get it now! Ripped from the original 7", 320 kbps! Zip contains cover scans and center labels too!

Jean-Pierre Ferland - Jaune (1970)

Here we have a fresh vinyl rip of Jean-Pierre Ferland's 1970 LP "Jaune"! If you haven't yet heard this rarity from Barclay records, you should certainly check it out. I was shocked upon my first listen how lushly produced this album was and how solid the song writing was. Beautiful arrangements throughout the LP take you on a diverse trip through some soft sentimental songs, dark heavy hitting grooves and even a disco number! Some of you may recognize Ferland's masterpiece (in my opinion) "Le Chat Du Café Des Artistes" which was covered by Charlotte Gainsbourg, on her IRM album a few years back. That was certainly the track that first caught my attention with it's heavy break-beats over lush orchestral stabs and spooky children's choir. Perfect chamber pop! Although the rest of the LP isn't quite as dark as that track, there are plenty of other lovely songs to discover here. One of my other favorites is the soft ballad called "Le Petit Roi" which is kind of the first official track on the LP. Towards the end of the song, the music fades out and then fades back in, coming back with some beautiful female vocals taking over the lead vocals. There are a bunch of cool musical interludes too throughout the album filled with great breaks, pick bass, orchestra and synthesizers. I think that's about all I should say. Give it a listen, it's a rare one and you can't find it anywhere else. This was ripped from the original LP by the Cowboys from Sweden. Enjoy! 320 kbps.

Be Quiet: Compiled & Mixed by The Cowboys From Sweden (2012)

Hello everybody,
it's been a while since my last installment. Today I am happy to present the eleventh mix by the Cowboys from Sweden! I have been playing around with this one for nearly a year now and it features some of my favorite tracks of possibly all time (At least a few). "Be Quiet" (inspired by Jean-Jacques Dexter's "Be Quite" which is not a typo) is another compilation of dark groovy tunes you'll be sure to fall in love with. This mix starts of a bit aggressive with a lot of heavy drums and percussion, chugging stringed orchestration and exotic instruments (there's even a little dip into some fuzzed-out prog rock by Electric Sandwich). After the initial build up, the mix takes you down into some dark groovy territory highly dominated by the productions of my favorites François De Roubaix and Jean-Claude Vannier. Some spacy vocal pop tracks and some instrumentals, this is your typical moody Cowboys listening session. Many of these tracks including songs by Jean-Pierre Mirouze, Bernard Levalliers, Leonie, Karl Heinz Schäfer and Jean-Claude Vannier have been a big part of our live DJ sets this year, so I am quite pleased to finally put them on a compilation. There was a lot of chopping and editing going on here, so some of the tracks are only partial just to add to the cinematic experience. Also to enhance the listen, I did a couple back to back tracks by the same artist (François De Roubaix, Jean-Claude Vannier & Nico Fidenco) to really capture the mood of the artist's work. Keep your ear out for the insane Vannier produced groove "Ah! Mon Cher Hector" by french vocalist Dani (might be my favorite song I've ever heard). Other notable tracks to look out for are "En Alabama" by Leonie, which is an alternate vocal version of a Jean-Claude Vannier and Karl Heinz Schäfer arranged track also known as "Je M'Appelle Geraldine" and the super cool synthy yet baroque track "Et Si On Invitait James Dean?" by François De Roubaix featuring a duet between Fred Pallem and Juliette Paquereau. Towards the end of the mix there is a breathtaking duet between François De Roubaix and Elisabeth Teissier called "Prédestination"; A cosmic astrology-centered love ballad with some of the grooviest drums, basslines and synthesizers I've heard in ages. I might also recommend that you check out the recent vinyl reissue of Jean-Pierre Mirouze's ultra groovy soundtrack for "La Mariage Collectif" that was featured on this mix twice with "Lovers Party" and the holy grail "Sexopolis" (originally released on 7" as a B-side to the pop song "Together", these two tracks where the only songs that ever got released from this soundtrack until now). Anyway, I could keep going on, but I don't want to spoil all the fun of actually listening to the mix. Hopefully you all enjoy the mix as much as I did making it...

Here's a quick 7" rip for everyone... Two rippin' fuzzed out mod rockers by Australian's greatest pop group: The Easybeats. You all know "Friday on my mind", but perhaps the b side is a little less familiar? It's hard to pick between the two, they are both excellent tracks. They both have the qualities that make most Easybeats songs stand out: Unbelievably catchy pop melodies + mind blowing fuzz guitar hooks! Don't think I really need to explain this one. Just listen to the dark fuzz riff on Made my bed: Gonna lie in it! Perfection.

Okay, here's the big Ozarks post! Ozarks is a band I'm in with my buddy and fellow Cowboy from Sweden Robbie Augspurger. We've been playing music together for years now and a few years back we also started DJ-ing as the Cowboys from Sweden together, which ultimately influenced the kind of music we were writing and recording. Ozarks is kind of a big mash up of sounds inspired by all the songs we love from the 60s and 70s all put on to one album. Highly influenced by late sixties and early seventies baroque pop groups (the Left Banke, Harry Nilsson, Badfinger, Beatles, Beach Boys, ELO, Zombies, Kinks etc..). You get the idea. This album is a combination of mostly brand new tracks recorded in the last year and a few very old tacks that we kept in the mix that date back about five years actually! So during the past few years we have both been avid vinyl collectors, collecting mostly foreign pop, soundtracks, baroque pop and garage records from decades before, which ended up influencing a lot of our recent songs and production choices. In addition to all the 60s pop and British invasion influences, you may also hear some nods to musicians like Ennio Morricone, Lee Hazlewood, Scott Walker, Serge Gainsbourg and dozens of other composers and bands that we fallen in love with over the past few years. Even though we pay tribute to many of these musicians, the music maintains a unique original sound. Robbie (who writes the songs) has a great talent for crafting songs that sound modern while simultaneously manage to sound like something from the past. Lyrically the album varies between absurd and very personal. Much of the album is pretty light hearted, but it still contains some songs about personal issues that come off as quite sincere. There is a dynamic rage of color and mood through out the 40 minutes of music contained on this LP, taking you on a little trip through light pastoral organ tunes, dark Italo-soundtrack atmospheres, mid tempo 70s guitar exploitaion, cowboy songs, densely orchestrated baroque pop songs, slow-motion liturgical grooves and dreamy cinematic ballads. It's a bit odd writing about my own band, so I will leave it at that. Hopefully you'll get the gist of what's going on here and check it out for yourself. Since this is our debut album, I thought it would be nice to share it with my readers in order to to spread the word a bit before we start on the next album. We sincerely hope you enjoy it. Ennio Morricone - Angel Face / Una Pistola Per Ringo 7" (1965)

Okay, here's another rare 7" from Italy. This one features music by Ennio Morricone written for the 1965 Duccio Tessari spaghetti western "Una Pistola Per Ringo (A Gun For Ringo)" starring babyfaced badass Giuliano Gemma. Funny enough, I've actually seen this film, however I only saw part of it since my friend and I tracked down a burned bootleg DVD at Movie Madness that was taped of Swedish TV (and had Swedish Subtitles). Where the story gets weird is about 15 minutes into the film it cuts to Ringo recovering from a gun wound in a rickety shag, nursing himself back to health by eating gross soup. Incase you didn't catch that, the DVD was missing about 40 minutes of the middle of the film, so it starts and then basically cuts to the climax, which was actually quite a funny way to see a film! After about a forty minutes of watching the film, it ended, then there was about 40 minutes of a really depressing Swedish daytime television movie from the nineties that played for the remainder of the DVD. Talk about a weird double feature, two completely unrelated half-movies for the price of one! It was pretty funny though. Thanks for checking your quality Movie Madness!

Anyway, back to the record. Side a features the soft western ballad Angel Face which features one of my favorite (phonetic) English singing Italian vocalists Maurizio Graf, who as far as I can tell has mostly done western songs. However, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an entire Maurizio Graf vocal album, I just haven't come across one yet. The song is very pretty and sentimental with top notch vocals by Maurizio. A typical Morricone western arrangement, with the big booming drums, twangy guitars, lush string arrangements and choirs backing the whole production. Side B, although it has an alternate title is basically the same as Side A except it is an instrumental version with the backing choirs more up front and a fuzzy lead guitar playing the melody in Maurizio's place. Both very nice tunes. I hope you enjoy them. Freshly ripped straight from the Cowboy's crates with large cover scans for you digital collectors out there...

Christy - Deep Down / Amore Amore Amore Amore 7" (1968)

Step back one year to 1968, set in Italy this time. Here we have the extremely rare Deep Down single performed by Christy. "Deep Down" is supposedly the only existing official artifact from the Danger: Diabolik soundtrack by Ennio Morricone (which is rumored to have been destroyed in a studio fire). I know very little about Christy except that she is an insane singer with a wild passionate delivery which rivals even Italian pop goddess Mina! Feel free to clue me in if you've got the goods on her. The track "Deep Down" was the theme song for Mario Bava's campy film version of the comic "Danger: Diabolik" which stars a sensuous blonde haired Marisa Mell and a typical wooden performance by John Philip Law (which actually works quite effectively in this case). This film is amazing, probably one of the most entertaining comic renditions I've seen. Super mod, super classy, lots of twists, amazing soundtrack! The music is your typical light hearted Morricone fuzz-fest. Driving drums, bells, percussion, mermaid vocals and sweet sweet guitar fuzz (presumably Alessandro Alessandroni). On the flip side we have a nice pop number written by Italian soundtracker Piero Piccioni. Slowed down romantic vibe building up into a huge yelling session by Christy. Pretty over the top considering the type of song it is. I tell you, the Italians know how to write an effective pop vocal track!

As promised, here is the first 7" to kick off a small series of seven inch rips by the Cowboys from Sweden. This one needs no real introduction, everyone should already know how amazing this little record is! Slogan is probably one of my favorite tracks by anyone ever with it's dark and sexy groove layered with orchestral stabs, groovy bass lines and harpsichord melodies so good that they are maddening! Talk about a duet, this one is unmatched! Beautiful, breathy, highly melodic and almost aggressive with passion. More please. Anyhow, I'm sure you all know it. So the real gem here is the B-Side. A little instrumental track called "Evelyn" which I believe was Jane Birkin's character's name in the film this was made for (the 1969 french art film Slogan). Great film as well, I highly recommend it! Anyway, Evelyn is a breathtaking piano driven number with a hypnotic groove and breezy instrumentation. Over all, it has a bit of a melancholy vibe to the melody, which is probably the reason I am such a sucker for it! This record is pretty hard to find and it occasionally fetches astronomical prices online. As far as I know, this 7" is the only official release of Evelyn (aside from the Serge Gainsbourg CD box set of film music put out some years ago). A true rarity, hope you enjoy it as much as I, and please spread it around...

Here's a very nice little piece of music from the upcoming Morriconez album "Cloud of Dust, Cry of Death". Sort of a genre bender stumbling a thin line between spaghetti-westerns and warm electronic psychedelia. This song in particular features a very pleasing classical melody played on guitar buried in layers of swirling psychedelic sounds. A musical mirage...

Ozarks - As I Lay Sleeping / 'Til I Die (2012)

Hello Everyone.

I'm happy to announce this free three track single by Ozarks that just came out this week. You may have seen the video for our song "Pyramids of Love" that I posted recently (See post below). Pyramids of Love was the first official release by Ozarks and the first single from the upcoming full length self titled LP (Out July 10th on Wil-Ru Records). "As I Lay Sleeping / 'Til I Die is the second single from the upcoming LP I suppose. This one features one of my favorite cuts from the album called "As I Lay Sleeping" A breezy piano driven pop track with a liturgical groove reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg's Je T'aime Moi Non Plus. Harpsichords, minimal breaks, clicky bass lines, organs, and piano (and some Badfinger-esque guitar riffs) support Robbie's melancholy falsetto vocal delivery. On track two we find a masterfully executed cover of Brian Wilson's 'Til I Die from the Beach Boys 1971 album "Surfs Up". Equally lush and moody musical arrangements float above a distant organ drum beat. A cover that remains pretty faithful to the original version! And the final of the three tracks is an alternate version of a song called "I'm Never Bored". The original version of this song is an organ version with full instumentation and will be the album opener. This version stripped down to only a few droning washy gutiar chords, a tamborine and vocals. A slight departure from the sound of the album, but it's a nice rendition that we felt should be heard as well (so we included it!). So please check it out and leave your feedback. Ozarks - Pyramids of Love (Video)

Check this out! My buddy Robbie and I (The Cowboys From Sweden) filmed this music video for our song "Pyramids of Love" a few weeks back. The track will be featured on our full length debut LP coming out in about a month or so. Our band is called Ozarks and the music is pretty heavily inspired by all the cool 60s and 70s baroque pop and rock bands that we all know and love so well. More info on that soon. With the video however, we were going for a live stage performance vibe (kind of like those tv specials and variety shows from the 60s), juxtaposed with some leather-clad giallo killer playing all the instruments. Hey Everybody,
just wanted to take a second to announce a new release we put out this week at Wil-Ru Records that I am pretty stoked about. This is some seriously textural and psychedelic minimal techno/electronic stuff by Izaak Schlossman (Aka Starcircleanatomy). Here we find Izaak starting off fresh under a new moniker (Morris Arch Nightwork) and changing up his entire sound palette quite a bit. I was blown away the first time I heard this release and it has been pretty much on constant rotation since I got it from Izaak a few months back. The entire album is quite dynamic, each track has a distinct feel and the atmosphere and rhythms change up quite a bit from track to track. The album opens with "01", which starts things off on an abstract foot, with barrage of amorphous chords rhythmically stabbing over a bed of ambient white noise. 02 features a bit of the same ambiguity, but dives into deep disintegrated textures and a heavy pulsing kick drum clipping a long in a nearly glitchy fashion. That brings us to "03 (For Dubai)", the only track on the album with a title included with the track number. This track is a straight up long form (13:54!) crowd pleaser! Truly straddling the line between dance floor ready House music and filtered abstract electonica. This track even has some obscured vocal samples cut up and peppered rhythmically through out the mix. Super hypnotic! After that, we get to "04", an extremely abstract track that is almost reminiscent of early Autechre or something equally as glitchy, thumping its way through over ten minutes of collaged textural sounds and subdued bass grooves. The last two tracks on the album (05 and 06) fall out into some smoky dubbed out territory, driven by 4/4 kick drums and bouncy filtered melodic layers that move while maintaining a tasteful minimalism throughout. It's a bit difficult to paint a clear portrait of what's going on on this album given it's natural complexity, but hey, just give it a listen and decide for your self! This album comes super highly recommended from me, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Almost an entire year has passed since my last Cowboys From Sweden mix tape was posted! That said, sorry for the wait! Anyway, here it is, the 10th mix by The Cowboys From Sweden (thus the title "X", the Roman Numeral "10"). This one is easily the most dynamic mix of the series so far. Starting off in a dark hallucinogenic daydream, exploring the bliss and loneliness of solitude. Soft dream-like soundscapes melt into dark classical psychedelia. Moody late 60's folk, sentimental piano music, some opium den music... The mood shifts and develops, like a journey for your mind! After a few choice break beat heavy vocal tracks, the mix escalates into a hazy cloud of early 70's prog-rock laced with swirling fuzz guitars, pipe organs, synthesizers and BEATS! Let's not forget about the key ingredient in every Cowboys mix: Groovy bass lines! Plenty of those to be found here as well. Oddly enough, this mix turned up a lot of tracks with upright bass lines as too. All of these ingredients combined build up to the climax of Serge Gainsbourg's "Cargo Culte" from the holiest grail of all pop records, his 1971 masterpiece "Histoire De Melody Nelson" (an LP included in every single Cowboy's DJ set since the beginning of time). Yes, I'm sure you all know it already, but I wanted to showcase it as the premier track since our 10th mix is kind of a special occasion for us, and that album has so much to do with our sound (Well, the sounds we like!). A toast to Serge and Mr. Jean-Claude Vannier! To settle things down after all the commotion, there is a little wink at the camera at the end of the mix with a quiet night time nocturne by Poyuschie Gitary... I hope that you all enjoy it, it's been fun making these mixes and I thank you all for your gracious feedback! It makes it all the more fun to know that people are listening and enjoying these rare tracks with us! Check out this new psychedelic drug-trip music video by Blind Slime from the upcoming new instrumental rock album "True Country". I highly recommend checking this out! Very cool psychedelic slacker rock filled with droning fuzz guitars, crisp punchy drums with sizzling white cymbals, warm melodic keyboard washes, twangy surf leads and warped vocal samples. Also this album was mastered by the one and only musical madman Brian Grainger! This album is a haze of pure psychedelic rock ecstasy! Worth it guys!

The second of two vinyl releases today from Wil-Ru Records! Busy day here! Anyway, here's what Grainger had to say about it...

Longtime friends Eric Adrian Lee and Brian Grainger finally unite on Backwater Fumes, a 7" split EP on marbled vinyl. Brian's side starts the affair with Mudd's Boots, a track that sounds as if ZZ Top were recorded on a wax cylinder, performing in a country line dancing club out in the swamp, and just as the band picks up the groove, zombies burst onto the dancefloor spewing swamp muck everywhere, only to be dowsed in bourbon and set on fire. After the panic dies down, Eric puts on his Biathalon disguise and cleverly sneaks onstage to flip the record over. Like aural heroin, the sounds of Moss seep out of the speakers and liquefy the minds of the line dancers. Subtle detuning and modulation vibrates through the walls and somehow, everything feels lighter for a moment. Satisfied, Brian bursts through the club's backdoor and meets Eric in mid-air with a Milli Vanilli style high five. At this precise moment, the PA system explodes but a fuzzed out signal incessantly pushes itself through the smoke and wires. Gigantic bass kicks storm the building as a cloaked figure can be barely made out through the haze...this must be Night Sequels, appearing unexpectedly with his blistering remix of Mudd's Boots. Scrambling, Brian and Eric frantically search for the breaker box, otherwise, if Night Sequels is not stopped, the world could be destroyed. Hell, so could the entire universe. At the last possible second, the boys cut power, dispelling Night Sequels back to his evil realm for another millenia, and Brian quickly restarts a charred black laptop to deliver the last burnt jam of the night: a dense, woodsy Coppice Halifax remix of Moss. Midranges smooth over the din and reverb smears reality left and right until we're left with one blurry camera lens. What just happened?
